Welcome to Antwerp!
This year, we’ll be taking you to our fine city university: the University of Antwerp!
The WordCamp will take you through the old historical city of Antwerp. On this page we’ll list all the venue information you’ll need + some extra travel info.
The main conference tracks are hosted in the city university, the Contributor Evening in ViaVia and we’ll take you to some extra fine locations for the after party and the Community Day.
All locations will be within walking distance of both our Cathedral and beautiful Central Station (except for the after party, but we’ll provide a shuttle if you’d need it).
University of Antwerp
When: Friday March 27th, Saturday March 28th — daytime
Where: Prinsstraat 13, 2000 Antwerpen
Most convenient entrance: Grote Kauwenberg 2, 2000 Antwerpen
Website: EN / NL
The university has 3 campusses, of course we chose the one right in the middle of the old city: the ‘Stadscampus’. Just be aware when you follow the signs: go into the city, don’t go out 😉
This means we won’t have the whole university for ourselves (that would be kind of selfish), but we will have 2 fine large auditoria and a couple of large classrooms for different simultaneous talks, breakout space and our hallway track.
If we’re lucky, we can have lunch in the wide and beautiful university garden. And like real students, we’ll have our closing drinks in the Agora Café (we’ll make sure the regular students leave us some room, don’t worry! ;).
P.S. Check the sneak preview we made on our visit to the University in December.
ViaVia Antwerpen
When: Friday March 27th — evening
Where: Wolstraat 43, 2000 Antwerpen
Website: EN / NL
If you joined us on our Contributor Day in 2018, you’ll remember this fine café/restaurant. We’ll have our Contributor Evening on the very same location: the upper floors above the restaurant are all ours!
Extra locations:
Community Day
Info page here: https://2020.antwerp.wordcamp.org/community-afternoon/
When: Sunday March 29th — 1 PM > 5 PM
Where: Grote Markt 1 (before the city hall)
After Party
When: Saturday March 28th — starting from 20:00
Where: Antwerpse Brouw Compagnie (Taproom)
Address: Indiëstraat 21, 2000 Antwerpen
Website: https://seef.be/
Yep, you read it correctly: our after party will be in a brewery! No worries, they do have non-alcoholic beverages too. They however won’t have any beers on tap they didn’t brew themselves. So no Bolleke here, but Seef, Super Cadix and more to make up for it.
This location is a little bit further from the old city center and Central Station. If you don’t like to walk, we’ll have a shuttle bus going from the university to the after party venue and afterwards back to the old city center or the Central Station.
Practical travel information
The Antwerp central train station is at walking distance
So arriving by train would be quite convenient. The university is only a 15-20min walk from the station. And did we mention our Central Station is beautiful?
By car? Antwerp is a low emission zone
Your car has to be ‘clean’ in order to drive into the city without risking a fine. Check if your car is clean enough & if so: cars with non-Belgian and Non-Dutch license plates also have to be registered.
When in doubt, or when you don’t want to drive into the city: check the Antwerp Park+Ride sites.
Parking
Don’t try to find a free parking spot within a half an hour walk: the whole city has paid parking, even in the weekends. Follow the parking signs ‘Universiteit’. Here’s a list of some paid parking garages nearby the city university:
- Parking Godefriduskaai, Zeevaartstraat 11, 2000 Antwerpen
- Parking Sint-Jacob, Sint-Jacobsmarkt
- Parking Sint-Jansplein
- Parking ‘De Knip’, Eikenstraat
- Parking Meir, Eiermarkt
- Parking Shopping Meir, Korte Klarenstraat
Hotels
Last WordCamp, we’ve heard positive feedback from attendees staying at Quality Hotel Antwerp (really close by the venue this year), Ibis Antwerpen Centrum, Pulcinella (youth hostel) and many more. Tweet/ping us if you need more tips!
